Tips on De-Stress

by myarticlenetwork on February 8, 2010

While stress management at work has always been an issue, it has become more important since the downward change to the economy last year. Stress and anxiety have always been a part of the workplace, but the change in the economy has increased fears of layoffs due to downsizing, changes in job descriptions and even reductions in pay. The book stores are filled with editions about how to manage stress. One basic way to begin to deal with it involves a healthy diet, exercise and changes in lifestyle. Your time on the job is important and how you handle change and stress can be dealt with by following some additional steps.

One of the major steps you can take to improve stress issues at work is with effective scheduling and prioritization. You may have limited control over how your schedule is set, but if you are able, then you should always strive for a balanced workload. The last thing you want is for large projects and important duties to be grouped together at the same time. You’ll feel less stress if you are able to spread things around so that you have more time to focus on each task.

After learning to prioritize, stress reduction can be done by learning what to delegate and what to take on yourself. Stress management is difficult for some people because they tend to commit themselves to more work than they can reasonably handle. Thus their job stress level is always high. Such people tend to be over-achievers or they’ve never learned how to say ‘no’ in an assertive manner. It is possible for such people to successfully work on many projects at one time, but the physical and emotional consequences will eventually take their toll on their health and emotional state of being. While it does look good to bosses to be able to do a lot, looking at what we can do to delegate tasks to others will actually help the entire company. Others can contribute, and yet you will still be a good worker and your stress levels will be decreased.

Another good way to manage stress is by starting work a little earlier. Even 15 minutes can make a huge difference in easing into your day, or taking care of some smaller duties that will free you up to focus on the more important projects. Dealing with stress doesn’t have to mean major changes to your workday. Starting a little earlier, taking an extra 15 minute break later in the day, or staying after work for 15 minutes are small changes that can bring real balance to your workday without drastic changes.

These steps are even more important to take at this time with our added concerns about the recession and fears of job security. If you can effectively improve your stress management, then your overall levels of stress will be greatly reduced. If you focus upon a healthy diet and exercise, and work on changes you can make to your work schedule, by prioritizing projects and delegating tasks, then you will find yourself calmer at work and happier at home.
