Subtle Signs of Stress
When we think of stress, we tend to see it in its obvious manifestations: hysteria, grouchiness, intense anxiety. But stress takes many forms and affects us – body and soul – in ways we often don’t even realize.
Signs of stress can be subtle. We might recognize that we have certain ‘nervous habits’ – tapping our nails, shaking our legs compulsively – but they seem harmless and we barely notice them.
Over time, however, these mild symptoms can get the better of us. Are you stressed without realizing it?
Here are some hidden stress signs to look for:
1. Procrastination. If you are relaxed about your personal and professional responsibilities, there is no need for procrastination. Not only is procrastination a sign you are already stressed, it’s a habit that begets more stress. The tasks you put off don’t accomplish themselves. They pile up and become a needless source of anxiety.
2. Escapism. Do you watch a lot of television? Do you spend hours upon hours each day on the Internet? Have your relationships suffered because, the minute you get home, you lock yourself away with a hobby that closes you off from the rest of the world? Overindulgence in any form of escapism is a sure sign that you are stressed about reality.
3. Self-defeating habits. The dangers of smoking cigarettes or drinking too much are obvious and are commonly linked to stress. But other stress-related habits can be difficult to identify because they seem like harmless quirks. If you habitually sit on your feet, for example, you may be unconsciously reverting to a childhood habit to ease the pressure of adult responsibilities. While it may seem trivial, over time you may develop bursitis, varicose veins or damage to your knees. Your stress levels manifest themselves physically in countless ways and, if not addressed, can lead to even more stressful health problems down the road.
We often don’t realize how stressed our bodies and minds are until a truly relaxing experience like a massage – or a disciplined exercise routine like a Martial Arts class - puts us in touch with our bodies.
While some may think spas are a luxury or indulgence, the truth is that anything we can do to keep our bodies and minds in open communication can be of enormous benefit. You may find you’ve been carrying destructive stress around with you and didn’t even realize it.
